Internal Queen Mary Students' Union Volunteering Awards

Certificate of Participation
- awarded to a volunteer who has volunteered through Provide volunteering over the academic year 2008-2009 either through 3 or more one-off Community Action Days, a minimum of 10 hours through the READ Book Project London East or a minimum of 10 hours through a placement with an organisation or charity registered with Provide Volunteering.

50 Hours
- awarded to a volunteer who has tracked and accumulated 50 volunteering hours over the academic year 2008-2009, through one-off Community Action Days, the READ Book Project London East or through a placement with an organisation or charity.

100 Hours
- awarded to a volunteer who has tracked and accumulated 100 volunteering hours over the academic year 2008-2009, through one-off Community Action Days, the READ Book Project London East or through a placement with an organisation or charity.

New Volunteer of the Year - awarded to a first year volunteer who has shown commitment and enthusiasm to volunteering during their fresher year.

Leavers Volunteer Award - awarded to a student in their final year who has shown dedication to volunteering throughout their years at Queen Mary.

Volunteer of the Year - awarded to an individual who has gone above and beyond that expected of a volunteer during the academic year 2009/2010
N.B. Provide Volunteering hours can be accumulated over one or more academic years in order to gain a 50 or 100 hours certificate. In this case, volunteers will need to log their hours in the same way, clearly stating the dates, and this will be double-checked with the organsiation or charity. If you already have written evidence of your time spent volunteering (such as a reference etc), this instead can be used. Please come in to the Students' Union Blomeley Centre so that I can photocopy this for awards reference.

Volunteering England Student Volunteering Gold Awards
The Student Volunteering Gold Awards are a mark of excellence in volunteering, and are awarded by Volunteering England, England's Volunteer Development Agency.
The Gold Awards recognise students under three categories, although students will not need to excel in all three to be nominated or receive an award.
Leadership: Students who excel in leadership, may have run their own volunteering project or taken a lead at a volunteering event with responsibility for guiding other students as awell as being a team player and volunteering themselves.
Dedication: Students who are the most committed and hard working of volunteers, who many not be at the forefront of running projects but can be relied on continually. Being an inspiration to volunteers, these students show loyalty and passion towards their volunteering.
Achievement: Students who have achieved in a particular project or on a more personal level.

Volunteering England Matt Spencer Award
Matt Spencer, who sadly passed away on 26 September 2001 aged just 23 years, epitomised student volunteering. He cared deeply about people, the exploitation and oppression they face, and passionately challenged it with his lateral approach.Matt became involved with Student Community Action at Queen Mary and Westfield College (now Queen Mary, University of London) where he became the SCA officer. The following year he was elected Vice President Education and Representation at the Students’ Union and joined the Trustee Board of Student Volunteering UK as a student director.
Matt’s commitment, enthusiasm and sense of fun inspired us all and will always continue to do so. His family have set up a fund in his memory to recognise the work of outstanding student volunteers. The fund intends to award one outstanding student each academic year with an award in the form of an inscribed tankard, a cheque for £100 and a bottle of champagne.
Student volunteers who particularly stand out and are deserving of ‘The Matt Spencer Award’ will be nominated for this award.

Higher Education Volunteering Award
The Higher Education Volunteering Awards reward and give national recognition to exemplary volunteering activities at Universities across the country. The awards work in arrears: nominations for the previous academic year are made in October and the awards ceremomy takes place in December.

Young Achievers Awards
The Young Achievers Awards are for 16-25 year olds who have accomplished something outstanding.The Young Achievers believe that the most successful way to inspire young volunteers, campaigners and social entrepreneurs is through action based volunteering, which is led by young people and provides inspiration to others.Young Achievers wants to recognise and celebrate over 50 inspirational volunteers in total, and all will receive some support and the winners and runners up will win cash prizes for personal and project development, an RSA fellowship and prizes. These are awarded on an annual basis in October/November.

Provide volunteering will also work alongside V, who champion youth volunteering, to offer QM volunteers the opportunity to work towards their V50 and VImpact awards (50 and 100 hours respectively), in addition to the Provide Volunteering hours awards. V have taken over from Millennium Volunteers.

Students' Union Colours and Honours Awards Ceremony
All volunteering awards and certificates will be awarded at the Students' Union Colours and Honours Award Ceremony taking place in the evening of Friday 26th March 2010.
The Colours and Honours Ceremony recognises the achievement and commitment of students involved in societies, sports clubs and volunteering.
